Coaches

Our Coaching Philosophy

Our coaches are not merely trainers. They have been employed by Gymnazo to apply both their academic knowledge and professional experience to instruct, encourage and partner with each Gymnazo member so that all members maximize their health, fitness and athleticism.

All of the Gymnazo coaches are trained in the truths of Applied Functional Science and are encouraged to continue to enhance their understanding of the science of human movement and how to best leverage this knowledge to promote the wellness of the Gymnazo members.

Coaching Experience
Amanda's athletic background comically started when she was 5 years old, playing soccer and scoring her first goal ever...for the opposing team! Most of her training knowledge and experience comes from her involvement in competitive sports and being trained by various coaches. She quickly embraced her passionate interest in health and fitness as a career path and focused her academic studies on human anatomy, exercise strategies and the physiology behind exercise.

Amanda was a collegiate Lacrosse player on the Cal Poly team which provided her the opportunity to complete a 12 week internship with Cal Poly's Strength and Conditioning coach and subsequently led her to training various D1 athletes. That experience exposed her to a dynamic workout design and generated new exercise ideas that she brought into the Gymnazo arena when she started as a Gymnazo G.A.T.E. apprentice. She has since transitioned into being a full time coach. Amanda commits 110% and Gymnazo has fully benefited from that commitment!

What motivates you in your work/role with Gymnazo?
Striving to encourage improvement is a high motivator for me! When I notice the progress someone has made, whether it be a small step or big leap, it makes my day! Knowing that what I do helps someone move forward in reaching their goals is very gratifying...it fuels my passion for training others.

What activities outside the gym bring you joy in life?
I love to run! There is no better feeling than running to the top of a mountain, feeling the sense of accomplishment and then sitting back to enjoy the view from the top. It is breathtaking to know we have such beauty in our own backyard. I also enjoy spending quality time with my friends and family, dancing, and going to concerts.

Favorite exercise at Gymnazo?
Anything to do with the Vipers! I think that they are such cool and unique pieces of equipment that make the workouts at Gymnazo one of a kind!

She has a compassionate heart and is always focused on ensuring that every Gymnazo member feels included and welcomed. The energy Shannon brings to each training session is an immeasurable gift!

What motivates you in your work/role with Gymnazo?
I am motivated by the results of the hard work and dedication displayed by each Gymnazo member, by the determination by those members that come 3+ days each week, and their discipline to keep pushing when it hurts. I love to see the satisfaction on people's faces as they continue to improve and realize the changes in themselves- both physically and mentally. Also, the friendships that are created inside these walls are truly one of a kind! I continue to learn and laugh with the people in my classes and I have found that you connect with people on an entirely different level when you sweat together.

Disco Dice! It is fun to try to "crack the code" that the dice are directing the individual to do. And it's entertaining to see everyone jumping to the beat of the music in the different planes of motion!

Education California State University, Fresno B.S. in Kinesiology, Fellowship of Applied Functional Science, ISSA Certified Personal Trainer, Titleist Performance Institute- Golf Fitness Instructor, Titleist Performance Institute- Junior Golf Coach, Post Rehab Conditioning Specialist.

Coaching Experience
Played Baseball, Football and Track and Field through high school years. Started a physical training regiment in the 7th grade which prompted the development of customized workout programs for friends. Was a certified personal trainer from 2004- 2006 at a corporate gym which enabled me to practically apply my Kinesiology studies. When I moved to SLO, I started working at San Luis Sports Therapy, aiding the in-house therapists while simultaneously training individuals at Athlon Elite, a sport performance training facility, and at Kennedy Club Fitness. In 2009, I supplemented my coaching, working at the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy as its fitness director during its inaugural year. While a personal trainer at the Kennedy Club Fitness, I co-founded a group fitness circuit training program which catapulted me into something much bigger!. My passionate interest in the fitness benefits of the functional movement style of training led me to the Gray Institute and its Fellowship of Applied Functional Science and I jumped right into its educational program...and Gymnazo was created and formed as a result of it!

What motivates you in your work/role with Gymnazo?
Being blessed with the opportunity to create and build a training environment that encourages transformation in people's lives! In my previous training roles, when clients would experience pain or movement dysfunction, I desperately wanted to help but couldn't due to limited knowledge and resources. Because Gymnazo is based on A.F.S.methodology, we now have the tools and the network of resources to not only ease the pain and correct the dysfunction but to significantly enhance physical movement and improve athletic performance.

What activities outside the gym bring you joy in life?
Wake boarding, Snowboarding, Trail Hiking, and recently Rock Climbing.

What is your favorite Gymnazo exercise?
Any of the 3D locomotion drills.

Gymnazo Internship Program

Gymnazo established an Internship Program in 2011 to provide an opportunity for local Cal Poly and Cuesta students, majoring in the dynamic field of health and fitness, to learn the foundation and principles of Applied Functional Science and then to immediately apply that knowledge via direct hands on experience at the Gymnazo facility in San Luis Obispo. Each Intern will assume the roles of an athlete (participant), a coach (teacher) and a teammate (encourager) throughout the program.

The Internship Program will cover the following four areas:

Education:

Interns will participate in weekly lectures on topics covering coaching techniques, exercise physiology, chain reaction biomechanics, functional assessment/ rehab strategies, and program design. The curriculum will focus on learning how Applied Functional Science is applicable to the different elements of physical training including but not limited to performance, injury prevention and rehabilitation.

Coaching:

Interns will learn how to execute the Gymnazo training methodology in both group settings and one-on-one sessions for the entire demographic range of Gymnazo members.. This immersion allows the interns to learn the science behind the training, but more importantly, the application of that knowledge when coaching solo or as a part of a team.

Administrative Duties:

Based on assessment testing and review, each intern will be assigned specific administrative responsibilities that aid in the short term and long term success of Gymnazo i.e.program development, membership evaluations, sales, strategic marketing, advertising & promotion and community outreach.

Facility Maintenance:

Interns will be required to embrace the importance of maintaining a clean and well organized facility and how that plays into the Gymnazo 'brand".
